Association between splanchnic venous thrombosis and cancer

2015.06.26 | Tina Christensen

Researchers from Department of Clinical Epidemiology are the first to show an association between splanchnic venous thrombosis and cancer. In a study of 1,191 patients hospitalized with splanchnic venous thrombosis, they found that 183 were subsequently diagnosed with cancer, which is four times more than expected. The most common types of cancer diagnosed were liver cancer, pancreatic cancer and blood cancer. PhD student Kirstine Kobberøe Søgaard, one of the researchers behind the study, point out that most cancer diagnoses were made within three months of the thrombosis and that survival in these patients was poorer than that of patients with the same kind of cancer, but no thrombosis.

The results of the study have just been published in the journal Blood.
