How can we offer patients with valvular heart disease and heart failure better treatment? This is the focus of Sten Lyager Nielsen’s research. He has just been appointed clinical professor at the Department of Clinical Medicine at AU and the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, Aarhus University Hospital.

"The professorship offers new opportunities to expand the research area and to establish national and international collaboration, so we can include even more aspects of valvular heart disease and heart failure. It gives us the best starting point to be able to develop and improve treatment for the benefit of patients with heart disease," says Sten Lyager Nielsen.

The Lundbeck Foundation has contributed DKK 6.25 million to the project in the form of a five-year clinical research professorship.

New and innovative treatment options

For the past 15 years Sten Lyager Nielsen has been conducting research into the treatment of valvular heart disease and heart failure. With the professorship he will continue to develop and validate new forms of treatment within reconstructive heart surgery through clinical activities and experimental animal studies.

"In the long term our developmental work will lead to innovative and improved treatment options for patients with heart disease. But for this to happen, we need to improve and deepen our understanding of the two diseases, so that we can offer patients the most optimal treatment," says Sten Lyager Nielsen.

Sten Lyager Nielsen has been a consultant at the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery at Aarhus University Hospital since 2007. He has been affiliated with Aarhus University Hospital for over 20 years and is the head of an international research team studying valvular heart disease and heart failure.
