He is one of the initiators behind the Danish Blood Donor Study, which is one of the world's largest population studies and biobanks with more than 110,000 participants. The goal of the study is to investigate the health effects of blood donation, while also acting as a platform for general studies about health and disease.

With his professorship, Christian Erikstrup will examine how the body is affected by blood donation. The goal is to ensure it is safe to donate blood with the fewest possible side effects. Christian Erikstrup also carries out research into why some people are more susceptible to infections than others.
