One of the key questions in neuroscience research revolves around the issue of when and where consciousness is activated in the brain. Kristian Sandberg’s research points towards this happening in the back of the brain and requiring so-called sensory signals. This means his research results go against the assumptions of the last few decades, and for this reason Kristian Sandberg argues in his doctoral dissertation for a paradigm shift in neuroscientific consciousness research.

Kristian Sandberg's research is based on empirical studies of healthy subjects and uses magnetoencephalography (MEG), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and behaviour in its methodology. The new doctor of medical science’s research presents a new methodological framework for neuroscientific consciousness research in the future, while the results can in the long term benefit patients with consciousness disorders.
