Nobody knows where and why Parkinson's disease begins. Recent research gives reason to suspect that in some cases the disease begins in the intestine’s nervous system and spreads from there to the spinal cord and brain through the peripheral nerves. If this is indeed the case, this knowledge will revolutionise researchers' understanding of the disease and open for completely new types of treatment.

Per Borghammer is new clinical professor at Aarhus University and Aarhus University Hospital. Here he conducts research into Parkinson's disease with particular focus on developing new scanning techniques to map the degree of damage to the different types of neurons.

The aim is to contribute to a more complete understanding of the origin of the disease. This is a prerequisite for developing the most rational treatments that can slow or completely stop the development of Parkinson’s disease – and possibly do the same within other disease categories.
