Clinical Professor, Consultant, MD, DMSc Jørgen Frøkiær has been appointed chairman of the Danish Council for Independent Research | Medical Sciences from 1 January 2015. He is professor, department chair at Aarhus University and is employed as head of research at the Department of Nuclear Medicine and PET-Centre at Aarhus University Hospital.

"I am taking on the role of chairman for the Danish Council for Independent Research with a great deal of respect for the council’s work. I look forward to fighting for increased non-targeted research funds for the many talented students who annually apply for funding from the council. Each year the council receives far more eligible funding applications from highly qualified colleagues than we can support. Our aim is for more applicants to receive funding from the council," says Jørgen Frøkiær.

His primary research areas are clinical and experimental functional research studies with special focus on kidney and heart disease. Jørgen Frøkiær’s research bridges the gap between basic research and clinical science.

Jørgen Frøkiær received his Master of Science in Medicine from Aarhus University in 1986 and defended his doctoral dissertation at the same university in 1998. In 1998 he became a medical specialist in clinical physiology and nuclear medicine and in 1999 senior research consultant in clinical physiology and nuclear medicine and human pathophysiology at Aarhus University Hospital.

Jørgen Frøkiær has had three research stays in the USA, he has a scientific production of more than 300 published articles, and he has also taken part in a number of European research consortia funded by the EU Commission and others. In 1994 he was awarded the Hede Nielsen Family Foundations Research Award and in 2003 the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF) Research Award.
