Travel grant sends two PhD students from AU and AUH on their travels

With an Elite Researcher Travel Grant of DKK 200,000, a research stay in the USA and another in the Netherlands became a reality for two young health science researchers from Aarhus University and Aarhus University Hospital.

Medical doctor and PhD student Ole Köhler-Forsberg from the Department of Clinical Medicine, Aarhus University, and the Psychosis Research Unit, Aarhus University Hospital, is one of this year's recipients of an Elite Researcher Travel Grant. Ole Köhler-Forsberg’s PhD project examines whether there is a connection between the immune system and depression, and whether it can be used to improve relevant treatment.

Some of his studies suggest that the immune system and a systemic inflammatory reaction are partially responsible for the development of depression in some patients and that anti-inflammatory drugs can have an antidepressant effect in such cases. With the help of the travel scholarship, Ole Köhler-Forsberg will travel to Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard University in Boston, USA.

Medical doctor and PhD student Stine Andersen from the Department of Clinical Medicine, Aarhus University, and the Department of Cardiology at Aarhus University Hospital, is the other Aarhus-based recipient of an Elite Researcher Travel Grant. Stine Andersen's PhD project focuses on what happens when the right ventricle of the heart fails. Failure of the right ventricle is the most frequent cause of death in patients with elevated blood pressure in the pulmonary system. Despite this fact, there are currently no treatment strategies aimed at supporting a failing right ventricle.

Stine Andersen's PhD project examines how scar tissue affects the heart, and whether it is possible to support the right ventricle medically by inhibiting the formation of scar tissue. Stine Andersen's Elite Researcher Travel Grant will be used for a six-month stay at the Department of Physiology and Pulmonology at VU University Medical Center in Amsterdam.
