Esben Søndergaard conducts research into a new form of treatment for type 2 diabetes which reduces the risk of heart disease and renal failure in people with type 2 diabetes. An extensive new study has shown that treatment with what are known as SGLT-2 inhibitors reduces the risk of death from heart failure and renal disease. The aim of the research is to map out the positive effects of the treatment and – in the long term – to contribute to a more targeted treatment of people with type 2 diabetes.

Esben Søndergaard has received three grants in total: DKK 368,482 from the Health Science Research Foundation of the Central Denmark Region; DKK 383,705 from the Danish Council for Independent Research; and DKK 968,543 from the Novo Nordisk Foundation. Esben Søndergaard sees the grants as a recognition of his work.
