Learned preferences. The evolutionary dynamics of mate choice

Both genes and environment play important roles in shaping our lives, and that of all living species. Recent developments in evolutionary biology show that in fact these dual forces also influence each other. My research focuses on mate choice in several animal species, in particular the influence of learning on mate choice. This presentation will focus on how the study of this animal mate choice helps to untangle the intricate web of evolutionary processes.
Machteld Verzijden received her PhD from Leiden University, NL, in 2008. Then she took on a postdoctoral project at Texas A&M University, USA, and subsequently went to Sweden, Lund University, before starting her AIAS fellowship in October 2014. She works on the evolution of mate choice in animals, studying this topic in a number of species: birds, fish and insects, as well as in mathematical models.

The AIAS Fellows' Seminar is a session of seminars held by the AIAS fellows or by other speakers proposed by the fellows. In each seminar, one fellow will present and discuss his/her current research and research project, closing off with a question and discussion session.
