Title:

Dance to the Rhythm? Finding new ways to combine dance, music and audience perception to highlight empathic connection

Abstract:

Choreographer and Artistic Director Rosie Kay will give a talk on the relationship between music and dance in her work. Trained in both dance and music (including music theory), Kay’s choreography intuitively developed a strong relationship between the dance, the music and storytelling, often working with live and improvised music. In 2008, Kay set out to create a work that utilized purely the relationship between the music and the dance to illicit emotional responses from the audience, the result being the award winning duet, Double Points: K (2008).

Following this experiment Kay then went on to work with the ‘Watching Dance Project’ and created a work to be explicitly used to test the relationship between the dance, the music and the audience’s perception, resulting in several peer reviewed published papers exploring the notion of ‘Kinesthetic Empathy’ – a phrase used to explain the magical connection between dancer and audience. Kay will talk about the benefits and difficulties of allowing a live theatre dance work to be used in fMRI brain studies and what the audience responses meant in term of developing her later works.

5 Soldiers- The Body is the Frontline was created in 2010 after Kay spent a year researching military infantry training with the British Army. Kay will discuss how this field research and the ‘Watching Dance’ results were used to create the final work, praised by soldiers and civilians for it’s visceral response in spectators. Kay will also talk about her work as the first choreographer appointed Leverhulme Artist in Residence at the School of Anthropology, University of Oxford, and her current work on pop culture, pop music, the CIA and modern brainwashing techniques in MK Ultra.

Kay is in Denmark to research her new work, Fantasia, which is a work that will focus on music, musicality, emotion, the brain and beauty.
