Program

1.  Welcome

Chair of the Animal Welfare Committee Birgitte Kousholt.

2. Systematic reviews of animal studies - 3R implementation and more

A systematic review is a literature review using a transparent and thorough method to summarize and synthesize available research evidence. SRs are standard practice in clinical research for decades. Although rapidly increasing, systematic reviews of preclinical animal studies are less common.

Systematic reviews of animal studies in the last decade have shown to be of great scientific value. Additionally, SRs provide insights into the translational value of animal research, which is crucial in the justification of animal use in biomedical research. Postdoctoral researcher at Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Centre Judith van Luijk gives a presentation on SR.

3. The Animal Experiments Inspectorate

Scientific coordinator at The Animal Experiments Inspectorate Leif Røge Lund gives a presentation on the work of the inspectorate. He will e.g. speak about the focus of the inspectorate, how they corporate with the animal facilities, and what we can learn to improve our daily work

4.  Animal models for cancer

The complexity of cancer has led to the use of animal models for understanding cancer development, establishing methods for its detection, and finding realistic treatment options for cancer patients. Some 95% of this research involves rodents (i.e., mice and rats), but other laboratory models (e.g., hamsters, rabbits, and zebra fish), as well as larger animals that spontaneously develop cancer (i.e., cats, dogs, pigs, goats and horses), have also been used. Professor Michael R. Horsman, who has more than 30 years of experience doing pre-clinical cancer studies with rodents, will discuss the types of models that have been used, and how the results obtained can be translated into benefits for cancer patients.
