TITLE:
Cognitive benefits and neuroplasticity induced by musical training
ABSTRACT:
Music processing involves almost every cognitive ability. Several studies have investigated benefits of musical training in cognitive functions and found increased verbal, visual-spatial and spatial–temporal skills. It has also been shown that musical training is able to shape brain structures such as auditory, motor and visual cortices, in both functional and structural levels.
Since previous research investigated mainly children cognitive abilities in relation to musical training, in the first study (i) we assessed differences between adult professional musicians, amateurs and non-musicians. We found higher performance in musicians compared to non-musicians in general intelligence, working memory and attentive abilities.
Furthermore, in order to synthesize results from brain structural studies related to musical training, we are performing a meta-analysis (ii) of case-control studies consulting online databases (PubMed, PsychInfo, Scopus). Preliminary results will be provided.
