Title:
Analysis of 'Effective Connectivity' from fMRI data to quantify brain dynamics.

Abstract:
Human behavior entails a flexible and context-sensitive interplay between brain areas to integrate information according to goal-directed requirements. Nevertheless, the principles governing the integration and coordination of functionally specialized brain areas remains poorly understood. Here, we introduce a theoretical framework that estimates the strengths of dynamical interactions at the level of the whole brain (divided into about 100 regions), which we call 'effective connectivity' (EC). Our method relies on a dynamic model of the whole cortex to reproduce statistics of task-evoked fMRI data. We extract spatiotemporal information from the so-called functional connectivity (FC) to obtain EC. This gives a fingerprint of the cortical network dynamics, beyond simply analysing the pairwise correlations between fMRI signals. Our results suggest a detailed dynamical balance between cortical interactions that allows for pathway selection in order to integrate sensory information, as well as mechanisms that modulate the global brain excitability.
