We invite you to join us at the upcoming meeting “20 years of alpha-synuclein in Parkinson's Disease and related synucleinopathies: from the bedside to the bench and back to the patient“. The meeting, a continuation of the tradition of biennial alpha-synuclein-related meetings that have been held for more than 10 years, celebrates the 20-year anniversary of the discovery of the link of the alpha-synuclein gene to familial Parkinson’s Disease (PD) and of the presence of alpha-synuclein as the main constituent of Lewy Bodies that characterize PD. Over this period of time, insights that have emerged through clinical and genetic studies, basic research in cellular and animal models, and neuropathological observations have led to the point where clinical trials targeting alpha-synuclein as a treatment for PD and related synucleinopathies are being planned and even implemented. The meeting will present the latest developments in clinical, biomarker, imaging and genetic studies in cohorts of patients afflicted with synucleinopathies, in the basic biology of alpha-synuclein, in experimental therapeutics primarily in animal models, and in emerging and ongoing clinical trials. Special attention will be devoted to ongoing studies in descendents of the original Kontursi kindred. There will also be a special session devoted to alpha-synuclein propagation, as an example of the unifying hypothesis of spreading in neurodegenerative diseases. Each session will integrate clinicians and basic scientists, so that fresh insights and a global understanding of the pathological conditions may emerge, while, at the same time, providing a rich and interactive teaching experience for the audience. The setting will encourage interaction, exchange of ideas and networking opportunities among all participants. The core meeting will be preceded by a half-day workshop on clinical aspects of synucleinopathies, culminating in an opening lecture by Dr. Stanley Fahn on the 50 year anniversary of dopamine supplementation therapy in PD. The meeting will take place in coastal Athens, in the historical town of Vravrona, home of the temple of Goddess Artemis and of the Archeological Museum of Vravrona.
