Mike Lean is Professor at School of Medicine, Dentistry & Nursing, University of Glasgow.
He holds the chair of Human Nutrition, based at Glasgow Royal Infirmary, where he is also a consultant physician with NHS responsibilities for an acute medical ward and emergency receiving duties. DiRECT is a research study investigating whether offering an intensive programme for weight loss and weight loss maintenance would be advantageous for people with type 2 diabetes. Specifically, this programme aims to increase the number of people who can become non-diabetic.
Professor Thomas Hummel is head of research in the chemosensory systems at the Smell and Taste Clinic, Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Technische Universität Dresden. This includes an olfactory/gustatory dysfunction clinic also involving patients with neurodegenerative causes of olfactory loss, and investigations in the intranasal trigeminal system. Investigations are performed using electrophysiological (olfactory event-related potentials, recordings from the mucosa of the nasal cavity), psychophysical, and imaging techniques (PET, fMRI). Many of these widely used techniques of olfactory function testing have been developed with his help, like the Sniffin Sticks, the taste strips, and the olfactory event-related potentials.
