The Greenland Ice Sheet is responding sensitively to climate change. In recent years many changes in the ice sheet have occurred, including large calving events, increased velocities of outlet glaciers and widespread melt over the ice sheet’s surface. These rapid changes of the ice sheet’s behavior make it difficult for forecasters to accurately predict how the ice sheet will respond in the future. Therefore, geologic records of ice sheet fluctuations are essential to put today’s changes into a longer-term perspective. In this presentation, I will show evidence from the geologic record (mud and rocks) of how the Greenland Ice Sheet has responded to past climate variations over the last ~12,000 years and demonstrate how these records contribute to a more complete understanding of the dynamics of the Greenland Ice Sheet’s past, present and future.
