The title of Dr. Seyed Mehdi Jafarnejad Shourkae's talk is “Fine-tuning and quality control of mRNA translation; implications in development and disease”.
Abstract
The synthesis of full-length, correctly folded proteins is crucial for maintaining the healthy state of a cell. Cryptic polyadenylation within coding sequences or incompletely removed introns produce aberrant mRNA transcripts. Production of such defective mRNAs is rather common in cells, although the majority of them are cleared within the nucleus. However, in certain cell types and stress conditions mRNA processing is less stringent. Translation of abberant mRNAs may result in proteins prone to malfunction and deleterious effects on cells. To mitigate these errors, cells have evolved the ribosome-associated quality-control (RQC) mechanisms that recognize and degrade aberrant mRNAs, such as those with premature poly(A) sequence within their coding region, and their resulting nascent proteins. This presentation will describe a novel mechanism that monitors mRNA translation and trigers ribosome stalling and RQC.

The talk will last for 45 min followed by 15 minutes of discussion.
