Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are covalently closed, endogenous molecules with tissue-specific and cell-specific expression patterns in eukaryotes. Some circRNAs are abundant and evolutionarily conserved, and many circRNAs exert important biological functions by acting as microRNA or protein inhibitors (so-called 'sponges'). Furthermore, circRNAs have been implicated in diseases such as diabetes mellitus, neurological disorders, cardiovascular diseases and cancer. In my newly started laboratory at the Department of Biomedicine, we profile global circRNA expression patterns and elucidate the functions of deregulated circRNAs in various cancers and aim to translate novel findings into clinical use. In this seminar, I will provide a general introduction to circRNA biology and give explanations to why these important molecules have slipped under the radar for so many years. Then, I will cover two recent circRNA stories from my own lab related to colon cancer and mantle cell lymphoma, respectively.
