"Awake rodent fMRI"

ABSTRACT:

Rodent functional MRI has been widely used for dissecting basic properties of fMRI signals. While most rodent fMRI research is conducted under anesthesia or sedation, fMRI in awake rodents has recently shown unique advantages. We developed robust awake mouse fMRI paradigms with multimodal sensory stimulation, and characterized its spatiotemporal characteristics in the awake condition. To further take advantage of the awake state, we demonstrated the first awake and behaving mouse fMRI paradigm, in which mice were imaged while performing complex cognitive tasks. Overall, our study established the utility of awake mouse fMRI, and extended this method to probe cognitive functions in the mouse brain.
