TITLE

No-Report and Partial-Report Paradigms in Audition: Implications for the Neural Correlates of Consciousness

ABSTRACT

Behavioral paradigms used to study the neural correlates of consciousness (NCC) are often confounded by task demands such as the need to report one’s percept. Recently, however, several visual groups have mitigated such confounds through the use of no- and partial-report paradigms. These studies have introduced new constraints on the search for the NCC, but it is unclear to what extent they generalize to other modalities. This talk will present electrophysiological and fMRI results from novel no- and partial-report paradigms in audition (taking advantage of phenomena that permit contrasts of auditory conscious content, e.g., “informational masking”) in order to dissociate auditory NCCs from potential task-related confounds. Overall, the results suggest that “true” auditory NCCs may be more spatiotemporally restricted than previously thought.
