Title: 'Psychiatric genetics - from rags to riches'

ABSTRACT
In Denmark we are contributing significantly to this progress, in particular due to the iPSYCH project, which was initiated in 2013 based on a generous grant from the Lundbeck Foundation. In iPSYCH we are capitalizing on the unique Danish register system and biobanks to conduct large genetic studies of major psychiatric disorders, in several cases by far the largest studies in the world. These studies include samples from more than 80,0000 Danish individuals of whom more than 50,000 are suffering from one or more psychiatric disorders. I will present highlights from some of our recent work, exemplifying results from genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and whole exome sequencing studies, providing novel insights into the underlying biology and paving the way for precision medicine in psychiatry. 

Psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, depression, bipolar disorder, autism, and ADHD are common complex disorders with a substantial genetic component in their etiologies. With several of the disorders showing heritability estimates as high as 60-80% it is the most heritable group of complex disorders known in man. Prompted by this, intense research efforts have in decades tried to uncover the genetic causes (i.e. risk variants) in order to get a better and much needed understanding of the biologic underpinnings, which are not easily accessible in other ways. After a long period with scarcity of robust results – mainly caused by the exceptional complexity of the genetic architecture of these disorders – this international endeavor is finally bearing fruits with major breakthroughs in several of the mental disorders.
