Background
Prof. Ziegler-Heitbrock is visiting The Department of Biomedicine in connection with Mikkel Carstensen's PhD defense at 13:00 later on Friday 22nd (same venue). Prof. Ziegler-Heitbrock is a leading international authority on monocytes. Among major achievements are the discovery of the CD16-positive blood monocytes; the discovery of the p50p50 homodimer mechanism in LPS tolerance, and the discovery of the role of Stat3 in IL-10 gene expression.

Appetizer for the presentation:

• With the description of subsets, monocytes have become informative in pathophysiology, diagnostics and therapy of disease.
• The non-classical monocytes show increases in inflammation and decreases with anti-inflammatory therapies.
• The dissection in flow cytometry of non-classical and intermediate monocytes is difficult with the standard approach.
• The presentation will show that the use of slan as an additional marker allows for unequivocal definition of these cells.
• Molecular studies into miRNAs and clinical studies in sarcoidosis and leukodystrophy will demonstrate the power of the slan-marker
