Abstract

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is a systemic inflammatory autoimmune disease characterized by a broad spectrum of clinical and serological manifestations. There is a lack of diagnostic methods for SLE, and because SLE displays significant clinical heterogeneity, it often results in a considerable diagnostic delay. The heterogeneous nature of the disease additionally complicates treatment. Broad-acting immunosuppression, like corticosteroids, can control the disease. However, single pathway targeting has not been successful in phase three clinical trials, and the era of biological DMARDs has not been the success story for SLE as it has been in other systemic autoimmune diseases. At the seminar, I will present some of our ongoing research and research collaborations in SLE, elucidate unmet needs with regard to the management of SLE patients, and demonstrate how SLE, because of the complex immunological pathogenesis, can serve as a model for many aspects of research in immunology.
