Intentionality at large and the intentionality of perception in particular are pivotal elements of both phenomenological and analytical approaches to the philosophy of mind. The topic is also on the front stage of recent and not so recent philosophical discussions about meaning-making in art, both on the production and the reception side.  

This conference is devoted to the exploration of intentionality In general, with a particular focus on intentionality in art (not only visual art) and perception. In the domain of aesthetic perception, i.e. as regards the perception of artworks, the problem of intentionality seems particularly acute in two respects:

1. if artworks are intentional objects that express meaning intentions how is meaning encoded in and extracted from shapes, colors, strokes, lines and composition?

2. To what extent are the local meaning effects and the global meaning of an artwork reducible to the creator’s meaning intentions (or to authorial intent)?
