Exercise as medicine for Type 2 Diabetes

Physical activity and exercise is considered a part of the multi-component clinical care of type 2 diabetes. However, the prescription and effective implementation of structured exercise interventions in the treatment of T2D have not been routinely used. This talk will critically appraise and debate this matter and include reflections on how to approach the inclusion of physical activity and exercise in the clinical care of type 2 diabetes.

Short bio Mathias Ried-Larsen, PhD

Mathias Ried-Larsen is a group leader and the coordinator of Applied Research program at Centre for Physical Activity Research at Rigshospitalet, Denmark. It is well-known that exercise lowers blood-glucose in type 2 diabetes patients. My research interests are thus focused on investigating to what extend exercise is comparable to medicine. That implies developing applied exercise and lifestyle interventions for the primary care and testing them using similar methodological standards as seen in drug development. The research track includes a special focus on the inclusion of information technology.
