TITLE:
Evidence for enhanced pain sensitivity and insula-based connectivity in healthy professional musicians.
ABSTRACT:
The constant integration of multi-sensory information during extensive musical practice can lead to enhanced processing of bodily information and adaptive neuroplasticity in sensory and motor systems. Interestingly, however, approximately 80% of musicians also experience prolonged episodes of musculoskeletal pain throughout their careers. The present talk provides novel data on the effects of musicianship on pain perception by assessing the sensory processing of professional musicians and non-musicians with and without chronic pain. The methods we used included quantitative sensory testing, heartbeat discrimination, and resting-state fMRI. Behavioural results indicated altered sensory perception (i.e., decreased tactile and increased pain sensitivity, as well as enhanced interoceptive accuracy) in healthy musicians, which corresponded to changes in spontaneous brain fluctuations as a function of both musical training and chronic pain.
