TITLE:
Making music as a model for adaptive and maladaptive plasticity
ABSTRACT:
Performing music at a professional level is probably the most demanding of human activities. During skill acquisition, plastic adaptations of the CNS occur at several levels of the central nervous system and can be impressively demonstrated with functional and structural brain imaging methods. In my contribution, I will present new data on functional plasticity in musicians casting some doubt on the quality of “everlasting plasticity” of the brain. I will furthermore demonstrate that motor disturbances, such as musician’s dystonia, are either linked to psychological traits or to basal ganglia dysfunction. Here, anxiety, reinvestment and dysfunctional plasticity play an important role. Finally, I will present a new model accounting for our findings concerning the triggering factors of musician’s dystonia.
