TITLE:

Are timing and auditory sensitivity determinants of musicality?

ABSTRACT:

Individual differences in auditory function can be observed even in typically developing individuals and the ultimate determinants for subcortical differences may arise from a combination of environmental, cognitive, and genetic factors that shape auditory sensitivity. Concerning the interface of musical expertise and auditory sensitivity I want to address the following questions:

 

(1) When we talk about musical expertise we often contrast the extreme end of a potential continuum: disorders or expertise. 

 

(2) But what about more basic capacities such as timing, synchonization, attenitonal orienting as potentially necessary building blocks shaping musicality?

 

(3) We often rely on tests of expertise (or diagnostics) that are music-specific. Should they be more basic?
