Francisca de Assunção started her path as a Biomedical Engineering student in 2015 at University of Minho in Braga, Portugal. Attending her final year of a master’s degree in medical informatics, she will conduct her thesis project “Automatic Segmentation of the Olfactory Bulb”, at MIB for an 8-month period.

Francisca is of an Erasmus internship under the supervision of professor Victor Alves from the Syntetic Intelligence group (ISLab) of the Algoritmi Research Center at the University of Minho and Assistant Professor Henrique Fernandes from MIB.

The whole project aims to develop a new automatized methodological framework that combines advanced algorithms of artificial intelligence (Deep Learning) with neuroimaging data to produce accurate segmentations of the olfactory bulb. The final goal will be to allow the estimation of different important metrics, crucial for a comprehensive characterization of this structure. Further to its potential, this method also aims to add higher consistency, objectivity, speed and classification reliability to the current available methods.
