Kære alle

Så har jeg igen samlet lidt forskelligt i et nyhedsbrev fra instituttet.  Jeg håber, I har haft en god påske!

Vi nedlægger hjernesamlingen på Risskov

9.479 hjerner i formalin er ikke med i flyttegodset, når Aarhus Universitetshospital i Risskov til næste år rømmer bygningerne på Skovagervej og rykker til Skejby. Beslutningen er truffet af Region Midt med opbakning fra bl.a. mig selv og prodekan for forskning, Ole Steen Nielsen.

Begrundelsen er, at det videnskabelige udbytte af hjernesamlingen ikke står mål med de betragtelige udgifter, der er forbundet med at flytte og bevare samlingen for eftertiden i det nye Skejby-byggeri. Det handler altså ikke om at spare penge i Translational Neuropsychiatry Unit, der i øjeblikket opbevarer og administrerer hjernesamlingen, men om rettidig omhu i forhold til en millionudgift.  I kan læse mere om beslutningen i artiklen http://clin.medarbejdere.au.dk/#news-10388, som også fortæller historien om, hvordan det gik til, at man i 1945 begyndte at udtage og gemme hjerner fra afdøde psykiatriske patienter med bl.a. skizofreni, depression og demenssygdomme.

Ny fondsdatabase giver nye søgemuligheder
Universitetets har købt adgang til en ny ekstern fondsdatabase, Research Professional, som alle ansatte har adgang til. Research Professional giver adgang til tusindvis af nye opslag under både Horizon 2020 og den store amerikanske læge- og sundhedsvidenskabelige forskningsinstitution National Institutes of Health, NIH.  Indtil videre supplerer Research Professional universitetets gamle fondsdatabase, ResearchFunding.net, som de fleste kender og er fortrolige med. ResearchFunding.net har stadig en berettigelse ift. nogle af de nationale bevillinger fra private, men jeg anbefaler selvfølgelig, at I udforsker mulighederne i den nye britisk-ejede database. Bl.a. kan I som noget nyt generere og downloade personlige lister og dele jeres søgeresultater med hinanden. Læs mere i artiklen Ny fondsdatabase flerdobler forskernes søgemuligheder.

Bliv klogere på ukendte IMI – NB tilmelding 1. maj!
Kun en håndfuld forskere på Health – hovedparten fra Institut for Klinisk Medicin - har fået forskningsmidler via IMI, Innovative Medicines Initiative, som er Europas største offentligt-private initiativ til finansiering af forskningssamarbejder mellem europæiske universiteter og lægemiddelfirmaer fra Europa og USA.  Trods muligheden for at hente store penge, er der ikke mange forskere, som søger IMI, og det har fået Health og Forskningsstøtteenheden til at arrangere et informationsmøde mandag d. 8. maj (NB: arrangementet kræver tilmelding senest 1. maj). Mødet har deltagelse fra Bruxelles, og jeg opfordrer til, at I som forskere overvejer relevansen af at deltage. Kast også et blik på artiklen IMI er en sikker vej til ubetalelige netværk, hvor to af instituttets forskere, professor Nanna Brix Finnerup fra Dansk Smerteforskningscenter og professor Lars Pedersen fra Klinisk Epidemiologisk Afdeling, fortæller om, hvordan det på godt og ondt har været at samarbejde med industrien, herunder hvilke overvejelser de har gjort sig om udbytte, EU-bureaukrati og meget andet. Mød Novo Nordisk Fonden på Health 2. maj
Tirsdag 2. maj klokken 10 og et par timer frem holder Health informationsmøde med Novo Nordisk Fonden, der fortæller om de aktuelle fundingmuligheder under overskrifter som ’pre-graduate scholarships and postdoctoral grants’,  ’investigator grants and fellowships, project grants and programmes´ samt  innovation and commercialization of research’.  Mødet finder sted i AIAS auditorium i Høegh-Guldbergs Gade og indledes af prodekan for forskning, Ole Steen Nielsen. Program og detaljer fremgår af kalenderen.

Hvad mener lægestuderende egentlig?
De 9.000 danske lægestuderende i Danmark er privilegerede og ressourcestærke unge med udsigt til et arbejdsmæssigt tag selv-bord. Alligevel hører vi mest om deres bekymrethed, mener tv-læge Peter Quortrup Geisling, hvis opsang ’Hvad mener I? Ikke en skid’ deles og kommenteres på sociale medier (linket forudsætter, at I har Facebook-profil). Tv-lægen hæfter sig ved, at lægestuderende tilsyneladende mest hidser sig op over ”4-års-reglen,  forældrekøb og snask og skrammel” og undlader at have holdninger til sundhedspolitiske dilemmaer som fx, at de rige lever stadig længere end de fattige. ”Danmark knækker sundhedsmæssigt, og hvad mener I om det?” spørger Peter Quortrup Geisling i videoen.  Opsangen kommer næsten sammenfaldende med, at vores egen studiemiljøundersøgelse igen konkluderer, at vi på Health har mindst 90 procent tilfredse studerende, hvoraf de 18 procent dog efter eget udsagn kæmper med stærke stress-symptomer som angst, søvnløshed og hjertebanken i forbindelse med deres studier – ikke kun op til eksamen, men til hverdag. Ny core-funktion på området fysisk funktion
The Physical FITness Testing Core Facility (FIT) er en ny core-funktion under Health, som tilbyder rådgivning, uddannelse og effektmålinger inden for området fysisk funktion. Det kan være målinger af fx kardio-respiratorisk funktion, muskelfunktion, balance, kropssammensætning eller analyser af bevægelser og funktionsevne – alt sammen tilgængeligt i de specialiserede laboratorier med adgang til faciliteter som CPET, dynamometri, iEMG, kraftplatformsmålinger, motion capture og DXA-scanning.
FIT hører under Institut for Folkesundhed og bygger på brugerbetalingsprincipper, hvor der skelnes mellem rådgivning og uddannelse til 755 kroner i timen og projektopgaver, hvor prisen fastsættes efter instituttets økonomiske retningslinjer. I kan kontakte FIT for flere oplysninger eller prisestimater.

IKM’s medlemmer af det nye forskningsudvalg
Institut for Klinisk Medicin har indstillet professor Jørgen Frøkiær fra Klinisk fysiologi og nuclearmedicin samt professor Nanna Brix Finnerup fra Dansk Smerteforskningscenter som instituttets to medlemmer af det nye forskningsudvalg på Health. Beslutningen er truffet af et enigt Lederforum.
Det nye forskningsudvalg er et af de indsatsområder fra fakultetsledelsen, der skal sikre flere og bedre fondsansøgninger fra de rette forskere. De øvrige institutter stiller ligeledes med 1-2 repræsentanter til forskningsudvalget. Læs mere om den bagvedliggende idé i Seks nye veje til bedre fondsansøgninger.

Justerede kriterier for optagelse på forskningsåret
Kriterierne for at blive optaget på forskningsåret justeres nu, så forskningsmiljøet kommer til at vægte lige så meget som kandidaternes personlige kvalifikationer. Med forskningsmiljø forstår man hovedvejleders kvalifikationer såvel som sammensætningen af forskergruppen. Justeringen blokerer for, at en hovedvejleder kan råde over et større antal forskningsårsstuderende. Fra og med i år kan man højst få tildelt én studerende per runde og altså to om året.
Som den sidste væsentlige ændring skal projekterne ikke længere vurderes af ph.d.-studerende eller rankes i det hele taget. Det er alene forskningsprogramlederne, der med et ’ja/nej’ vurderer, om projektets omfang passer til et forskningsår, hvad angår arbejdsbelastning og videnskabeligt niveau. 

Med de nye kriterier optager Health fortsat 100 forskningsårsstuderende, og justeringen løser ikke det problem, der ligger i, at man kan få afvist en forskningsårsstuderende, selv om fondsmidler eller anden ekstern finansiering på forhånd er sikret. Dog indgår evnen til at skaffe finansiering i vurderingen af hovedvejleders kvalifikationer. IKM’s hjemmeside har skiftet udseende
Vores eksterne hjemmeside har ændret udseende, så forsiden i tekst og billeder nu præsenterer instituttet med bl.a. corefaciliteter og forskningssamarbejder og ikke – som tidligere – med et organisationsdiagram. Ræsonnementet er, at det vi kan og står for har større interesse udadtil end vores organisering med fire centre, psykiatrien, regionshospitalerne og præhospitalet. I forbindelse med oprydningen er de lægefaglige specialer blevet præsenteret mere ens, og vi er overgået til et nyt, såkaldt responsivt design, der også fungerer på mobiltelefon. Mange har arbejdet med at rydde op og forbedre, men især tak til Iris Galili i Health Kommunikation, som er hjernen bag de store forandringer.

Populært online-kursus udbydes igen

Inden påske opfordrede jeg nye og erfarne undervisere til at overveje kurset InTeL, som AU har udviklet for at øge kendskabet til begreber og metoder, der skaber kvalitet i undervisning. Interessen for kurset var overvældende, og CESU måtte lukke for tilmeldinger før den annoncerede deadline. Heldigvis er kurset udviklet for at blive udbudt mere end én gang, og lige nu er planen, at næste kursus udbydes i juni. Dato og antal pladser annonceres inden for den nærmeste tid på CESUs hjemmeside. Hvis man ønsker at komme på venteliste, skal man kontakte Jens Laurs Kærsgaard fra CESU (jenslaurs@cesu.au.dk). Der vil igen være begrænset antal pladser, som vil fordeles efter først-til-mølle princippet.

Once again I have gathered some information for you in my latest newsletter. I hope you have all enjoyed a lovely Easter holiday.

We close down the brain collection in Risskov

9479 brains in formalin are not part of the furniture when Aarhus University Hospital in Risskov empties their buildings in Risskov next year in order to move to Skejby. The decision has been made from the Central Denmark Region with support from, among others, myself and Associate Dean for Research, Ole Steen Nielsen. The reason for this decision is that the scientific benefits of the brain collection are not compatible with the considerable costs associated with moving and preserving the collection at  the University Hospital in Skejby. It is not about saving money in Translational Neuro Psychiatry Unit which currently holds and administers the brain collection but more about constant care in relation to the expense. You can read more about the decision in the article http://clin.medarbejdere.au.dk/#news-10388, which also tells the story of how it came about that scientists in 1945 began withdrawing and saving brains from deceased psychiatric patients including schizophrenia, depression and dementia.

New fund database provides new search capabilities

Aarhus University purchased access to a new external fund database Research Professional which all employees have access to.  The database provides access to thousands of new entries under both Horizon 2020 and the great American medical- and health research institution National Institutes of Health, NIH.  So far the database complements the old fund database from AU called ResearchFunding.net  which most of you are familiar with and it still has a justification in relation to some of the national funding from private, but I recommend of course that you explore the new possibilities of the new British-owned database. You will be able to generate and download personalized lists and share your research results with each other. Learn more about the unknown IMI – NB registration May 1

Only a handful of scientists at Health – the main part from the Department of Clinical Medicine – have received research funding via IMI – Innovative Medicines Initiative, which is Europe’s largest public-private initiative to fund research collaborations between European universities and pharmaceutical companies from Europe and the United States.  Despite the ability to obtain big money there are not many scientists who apply for IMI therefore Health and the Research Support department arrange an information meeting May 8 (NB : The event requires registration no later than May 1). The meeting involves participation from Brussels and I urge you to consider the relevance of participating. Meet Novo Nordisk Foundations at Health on May 2

Tuesday May 2 at 10 am Health will hold an information meeting with the Novo Nordisk Foundation. The fund will talk about the current funding opportunities under headlines such as “pre- graduate scholarships and postdoctoral grants”, “investigator grants and fellowships”, “project grants and programs” and “innovation and commercialization of research”. The meeting will take place in AIAS auditorium at Høegh- Guldbergs Gade and will be initiated by the Associate Dean for Research, Ole Steen Nielsen. What do medical students really mean?

The 9000 Danish medical students in Denmark are privileged and resourceful young people with a bright and positive future. Yet we hear them worry all the time. At least that is the opinion of TV doctor Peter Quortrup Geisling in his comment on Facebook: Hvad mener I? Ikke en skid (what do you mean? Not a damn thing). The comment is closely discussed and shared at social media.  The TV doctor states, that the medical students apparently are angered by the “four-year-rule”, mess and trash and fail to have an opinion on important matters such as health policy dilemmas – for instance the rich still live longer than the poor. What do you think about that?– asks Peter Quortrup Geisling in the video. The scolding comes almost at the same time as our own study shows that at least 90 percent of the students at Health are satisfied, however there are 18 percent who struggles with strong stress symptoms such as anxiety, insomnia and palpitations associated with their studies – not only in connections with the exam period but every day. The Physical FITness Testing Core Facility (FIT)

The Physical FITness Testing Core Facility (FIT) is a new core function at Health which provides counseling, education and power measurements in the field og physical function.  It can be measurements such as cardio-respiratory function, muscle function, balance, body composition or analysis of movement and function – all available in specialized laboratories with access to facilities such as CPET, dynamometry, iEMG, force platform measurements, motion capture and DXA scan. FIT is part of the Department of Public Health and is based on user principles that distinguish between advice and training for the amount of 755 DKK per hour and project assignments where the price is determined by the economic guidelines of the Institute. You can contact FIT for more information and cost estimates.

Members of the new of the new research committee at Department of Clinical Medicine

The department has nominated Professor Jørgen Frøkiær of Clinical Physiology and Nuclear Medicine and Professor Nanna Brix Finnerup from Danish Pain Research Center as the two members of the new Research Committee on Health. The decision was made by a unanimous department management. The new committee is to ensure more and better fund applications from the right researchers. The other departments will also have 1-2 representatives in the committee.  Read more about the issue at Six new ways to better funding applications

Adjusted criteria for admission to the research year

The criteria for inclusion in the research year is now being adjusted, so that research environment will be equally important as the candidates' personal qualifications. With research you understand the principal supervisor's qualifications as well as the composition of the research group. The adjustment block that a supervisor may have a greater number of research students. Starting this year can be a maximum allocation of one student per round which makes it two per year. As the last substantial transformation, projects must no longer be assessed by PhD students or ranks at all. It's only research program managers who with a 'yes / no' can assess whether the project’s proportions are suitable for a research year in terms of workload and scientific level.  With the new criteria Health still records 100 research year students, and the adjustment does not solve the problem in getting a student rejected, although funding and other external financing has been secured beforehand.   Find the new criteria at the Ph.D. School website or read more in the article The research year: we have listened to the environments

New website layout

Our external website has changed appearance. The front page represents the Department, the core facilities and research partnerships.  In connection with the clean-up, the medical specialties are presented more alike and we put in a new so-called responsive design so the website is easy to read at a smartphone. A lot of people have been working on the improvement of the website. Especially thank you to Iris Galili in Health Communication who is the mastermind behind the major changes. I hope you enjoy the new layout. 

Popular online course is offered again

Right before Easter I called new and experienced teachers to consider the course InTeL which AU has developed to increase the awareness of the concepts and methods that create excellence in teaching. The interest in the course was overwhelming and CESU had to close for entries before the announced deadline. Fortunately, the course is designed to run more than once and right now the plan is that then next course will be offered in June. Date and number of seats is to be announced later on at CESU’s website. If you wish to be on the waiting list, please contact Jens Laurs Kærsgaard from CESU at jenslaurs@cesu.au.dk . There will again be a limited number of seats which will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.
