Abstract:

Blood vessels ensure nutrient and oxygen supply to all cells via transport thought the endothelium. The endothelial cell (EC) layer lining the luminal side of blood vessels forms a selective interface between the circulating blood and the surrounding tissue. ECs display high plasticity: i.e. in health, ECs established blood vessels are quiescent and rarely divide but upon stimulation in pathological conditions, they switch to a proliferative state and can migrate to form new sprouts.

Each tissue in our body has its own vascular bed that helps to carry out its distinctive and versatile functions. The anatomical classification of blood vessels into arteries, capillaries and veins, and morphological grouping of ECs into barrier – forming continuous ECs, fenestrated ECs and sinusoidal ECs has long been recognized. Nevertheless, the functional properties and underlying molecular mechanisms of these specialized vasculatures have only started to be uncovered recently. The approaches on how to decipher ECs heterogeneity, e.g. by single cell RNA sequencing, will be presented during the seminar.
