Sports Injuries in Denmark 2016

In collaboration with IDAN, RUNSAFE have investigated the prevalence and prevalence proportion of sports injuries across many types of sports.

At the conference "Idrættens største udfordringer" the results from "Sports Injuries in Denmark 2016" were released. Andreas Bueno, Camma Damsted, Daniel Ramskov and Rasmus Nielsen have assisted IDAN (Idrættens Analyseinstitut) in creating a questionnaire, which was distributed to a representative sample of the Danish population consisting of  10.000 adults (response proportion = 35%) and 6.500 children and adolescents (response proportion = 49.5%).

Prevalence

Amongst adults, running, followed by soccer and strength training,  was the sport, which contributed with most injuries. The type of sport contributing with most injuries were: 

  • Running (n=226)
  • Soccer (n=121)
  • Strength training (n=94)
  • Handball (n=44)
  • Badminton (n=31)

Amongst children and adolescents, soccer, followed by handball and gymnastics, was the sport, which contributed with most injuries. The type of sport contributing with most injuries were: 

  • Soccer (n=263)
  • Handball (n=93)
  • Gymnastics (n=81)
  • Running (n=58)
  • Trampolin (n=27)
