Afternoon Talk on Open Science
Open science and open access are considered important mechanisms for optimizing the societal benefit of public research. On the one hand, there is an awareness that the data and results generated by publicly funded research should be made publicly accessible. On the other hand, universities are also part of an increasingly competitive ecosystem of research and innovation actors, and have been expected to pursue possibilities for patenting and commercialization. So, how do universities strike the right balance between opening up and protecting its results? What are the benefits emerging from different approaches to openness?
A new initiative with an Open Science-platform (SPOMAN) at Aarhus University is an attempt to open up and give the public access to university research and research results and to collaborate with the industry in a patent-free environment. The idea behind this initiative is that universities should focus on their core role in society - fundamental research. What are the immediate experiences with the initiative? Is SPOMAN a viable way for efficient collaboration? And which are the challenges that companies encounter in this kind of environment. The speakers are both engaged in the new initiative representing the university and industry respectively.
Speakers: Jens Vinge Nygaard, associate professor, Department of Engineering and (from Industry) Søren Porsgaard, PhD, CTO, Unisense A/S.
