Unravelling the Neurobiology of Interoceptive Inference

In a short review article in the Cell journal Trends in Cognitive Sciences, head of the Embodied Computation Group at CFIN Micah G. Allen discusses the function of the insular cortex, and how causal evidence for the nascent theory of interoceptive inference has now been identified.

In the short ‘Spotlight’ commentary, cognitive neuroscientist Micah G. Allen, head of the Embodied Computation Group at CFIN, AU reviews the implications for interoception research of two recent articles by Gehrlach et al. and Livneh et al. Collectively, these studies evidence what has long been suspected from neuroimaging that the posterior insula is a crucial hub for integrating interoceptive predictions and emotion.
