TITLE: Imaging tissue microstructure with MRI: Bridging across scales
Synopsis:
Imaging tissue microstructure has become an ultimate scientific frontier in the quantitative MRI, with a rapidly increasing number of publications and sessions at ISMRM meetings. Bridging across scales from millimeters to microns relies on identifying cellular-scale tissue features that give a noticeable contribution to a voxel-wise diffusion MRI signal. From the bottom-up, I will outline the ways of looking for these elusive features, and discuss modeling successes and challenges. From the top-down, I will show how random matrix theory-based noise reduction and image reconstruction can enable microstructure mapping at the resolution higher than anatomical, on a clinical scanner.
