AU researchers receive DKK 20 million to develop the healthcare solutions of the future

Citizens must take responsibility for their own health data. This is the idea behind an interdisciplinary project which Carsten Obel from the Department of Public Health is behind together with Kaj Grønbæk from the Department of Computer Science. The project has received DKK 20 million from Innovation Fund Denmark.

Expensive medicine, an increasing number of elderly people and more chronic patients are some of the health challenges which require different thinking when it comes to prevention and treatment in the future. And this is what the two researchers from Aarhus University are doing with the HealthD360 project, which aims to ensure better health by compiling data from the public health system in Denmark and connecting it with data from people’s smartphones and wearable medical devices.

The purpose of the project is to develop new models for effective, personal and coherent patient care. This will be done by e.g. establishing a new data infrastructure and cooperation infrastructure that can collect and analyse different types of data. An infrastructure that supports secure handling of health data and gives patients the possibility of sharing data with the healthcare system.

Initially, the project comprises two pilot areas in selected municipalities; mental health and obesity in children and young people, chronic wounds and mental and physical function in elderly people.

The project includes both private and public stakeholders and is a partnership between Aarhus University, Alexandra Institute, Danish Technological Institute, Bispebjerg Hospital, Randers Regional Hospital, Cambio, Novax, Opus Consult, Kite Invent, Sundhed.dk, The Danish Clinical Registries (RKKP), Danish Patients and the municipalities in Aarhus, Favrskov, Odder and Ringkøbing-Skjern.
