Only a few years ago, the sole treatment option for patients with cancer of the bones and connective tissue was amputation. This is no longer the case. Today, patients are offered gentler surgery and individually adapted prostheses.

Newly appointed professor at the Department of Clinical Medicine, Thomas Baad-Hansen, conducts research into personalised surgery, where the individual patient receives personalised treatment which is targeted at increasing survival and improving quality of life.

Thomas Baad-Hansen utilises the possibilities found in the technological developments in regard to gentler and precise removal of cancerous tissue. In addition, 3D printing has become very important in his research, as he has developed a way of utilising the technology to print personally adapted prostheses and plan complex interventions. The individual approach is designed to ensure that patients with cancer get through the disease better.

In his new professorship, Thomas Baad-Hansen will dedicate more time to exploring the technological opportunities to further improve the treatment – also for patients with other types of cancer.
