Clinical Associate Professor and Consultant Reimar W. Thomsen has spent the past 16 years working on research into improving the treatment of Danish diabetic patients. He receives the Niels Schwartz Sørensen Award for his work to build a strong register-based research infrastructure within the field of diabetes in Denmark – including the nationwide DD2 project which comprises more than 8,000 patients with type 2 diabetes.

Reimar W. Thomsen was also among the first to demonstrate the risk of infectious diseases among diabetics via large population-based studies. He also studied the beneficial effect of cholesterol-lowering treatment in relation to infections at an early stage.

This year’s Niels Schwartz Sørensen Award goes to both Reimar W. Thomsen and Marit Eika Jørgensen from the Steno Diabetes Center. The two award winners each receive a scholarship of DKK 50,000.
