Glioblastomas (GBs) are one of the most aggressive cancers, with no change in standard of care for 20 years and median survival about 15 months. This bleak outcome has stimulated a new generation of therapies that target Achilles’ heels of these tumors and their microenvironment. This Advanced Course will focus on new approaches towards treating brain tumors geared towards clinical and molecular aspects. Key among these is the genetic heterogeneity of these tumors: new technologies have revealed a variety of communication venues among tumor cells and host cells in their environs, including exosomes and nanotubes, and the essential need to study both tumor cells and supporting host cells, such as microglia. Key strategies include evoking immunotherapy through use of checkpoint inhibitors and genetically modified T cells presenting chimeric receptors targeting tumor antigens (CAR T cells), and combining this with re-tooled viral therapies. Read more about the course here
