Abstract
Folate and cobalamin are key micronutrients that interplay to ensure cell function. Insufficiencies are common and can have serious health problems. Legislations on fortification of staple foods with folic acid have been applied in numerous countries. In Europe we continue to lose significant number of births with folate-responsive birth defects each year. Moreover, population subgroups (i.e. elderly, diabetics) often have unexplained subtle cobalamin deficiency and might benefit from early intervention.
Rima Obeid studied Pharmacy at the University of Damascus, Syria. After completing PhD in Clinical Biochemistry at the University of Saarland, Germany, she received Alexander-von-Humboldt research Fellowship. Thereafter, she was appointed as assistant professor at the University of Saarland until 2012. She finished her Habilitation (VENIA LE GENDI) and was working at the University Hospital of the Saarland, Germany until the start of her AIAS Fellowship.
