Translational Psychiatry. From genes to mice to men to populations to global health

Abstract
Mental disorders are complex and for the most cases their etiology is largely unknown. Therefore, treatment remains suboptimal and the prognosis of many mental disorders is rather poor. There is however considerable agreement in the field that these challenges may be overcome by translational psychiatric research, i.e. by studies that cover the full pathway from discovery in the lab, bench to bedside, bedside to clinical applications, and from clinical applications to healthcare and global health. In this seminar I will present results from my own translational psychiatric research and give an outline of ongoing/future studies.
Søren D. Østergaard is a medical doctor with an interest in psychiatric research – in its broadest sense. He obtained his PhD from Aarhus University researching psychotic depression – a severe subtype of depression with accompanying delusions or hallucinations. Apart from his affiliation with Aarhus Institute of Advanced Studies, he currently holds a position as Associate Professor of Translational Psychiatry at the Department of Clinical Medicine at Aarhus University.

The AIAS Fellows' Seminar is a session of seminars held by the AIAS fellow or by other speakers proposed by the fellows. In each seminar, one fellow will present and discuss his/her current research and research project, closing off with a question and discussion session.
