AU researcher receives higher doctoral degree in spinal operations

Medical Specialist in orthopaedic surgery, Thomas Borbjerg Andersen, from Aarhus University and Aarhus University Hospital will become a new Doctor of Medical Science in spinal surgery.

Thomas Borbjerg Andersen receives higher doctoral degree at AU.

Thomas Borbjerg Andersen has studied the effect of stiffening spinal surgery in elderly patients to find the best treatment and assess the socio-economic benefits of the procedure. The research relates in particular to elderly patients who undergo operations for what is known as spinal stenosis, which is a narrowing of the spinal canal. It is the most frequent cause of spinal surgery in persons over the age of sixty.

Thomas Borbjerg Andersen will defend his higher doctoral dissertation entitled "Lumbar spinal fusion in elderly patients – Studies on fusion rate improvement, outcome prediction and health economic impact” on 16 December 2016.
