Peter Carmeliet's research is largely about finding methods to quickly clarify whether a potential medicinal product has the potential to be turned into something that is clinical relevant and therefore of interest for investment by the pharmaceutical industry.

At present, this clarification can take many years, but Peter Carmeliet has developed different methods and techniques to speed up the process.

He has, among other things, developed a tool based on artificial intelligence that can predict the function of a given gene, even though nothing is known about the functionality of the gene in advance. The method can quickly help to determine whether a gene is interesting in a pharmaceutical context.
