Assistant Professor Maria Andreasen from the Department of Biomedicine is being honoured as one of Denmark's most promising, female research talents with the presentation of the For Women in Science Award today – an award that UNESCO, the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters and L’Oréal are jointly behind.

Maria Andreasen dreams of making a difference – both when it comes to inspiring younger women to choose a career in the world of research, and particularly by helping patients with e.g. Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease through her research, which is relevant for them.
Maria Andreasen uses the long hours spent in the laboratory to study and understand the mechanisms behind the formation of biofilm in bacterial infections. Her goal is to find out why the bacteria are able to resist the effects of the surrounding environment and what role protein aggregation plays in the process. All with the aim of helping patients who are already affected by diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s to avoid infections.
The For Women in Science award will be presented to Maria Andreasen by HRH Princess Marie, patron of the Danish UNESCO National Commission, and Mogens Høgh Jensen, professor and president of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters, on Wednesday 15 May 2019 at the Carlsberg Academy in Valby, Copenhagen. The award includes DKK 110,000 towards the individual recipient’s research project.
