Abstract
Diffusional kurtosis imaging (DKI) is an MRI technique that quantifies the departure of the water diffusion statistics in biological tissues from a normal (Gaussian) distribution. In particular, DKI provides metrics related to the kurtosis of the molecular displacement distribution for water diffusion. The kurtosis is sensitive to tissue microstructure and may be useful for assessing a variety of diseases, especially in brain. In this talk, we review the basics of DKI and discuss recent work related to white matter fiber tractography, estimation of axonal density, and the extension of DKI to double pulsed field gradient diffusion sequences.
