Abstract

Sense of agency refers to the feeling of control over our actions and the effects of those actions. Over the past decade sense of agency has attracted increased interest in neuroscience, psychology and philosophy.  The aim of this talk is to explore further this core feature of self-awareness. In the first part of the talk I will discuss the cognitive and neural basis of this experience. Here I will focus on predictive and postdictive processes underlying sense of agency, as well as brain regions linked to this experience. In the second part of the talk I will examine the broader significance of sense of agency, focussing on its relevance to a) clinical disorders, b) applied research domains, and c) philosophical issues concerning human freedom and responsibility.
