The brain’s cells are well protected behind a blood-brain barrier, which rejects undesired proteins, toxins and extraneous organisms. But the barrier also blocks medical treatment of brain diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease.

The Lundbeck Foundation is now awarding DKK 20 million to a team of researchers who are working towards a better understanding of the barrier and towards finding a way to circumvent it. The grant is a continuation of a previous grant of DKK 40 million.
Morten Schallburg Nielsen's research group is working to identify one or more of the receptors which can transport medicine past the protective barrier around the brain. This could pave the way for developing new and more efficient medicines against brain diseases.
