Associate Professor, Consultant and DMSc Søren Nielsen from the Department of Clinical Medicine will receive almost DKK five million over a five-year period from the Novo Nordisk Foundation towards his research into increased cardiovascular risk and heart failure in overweight people and patients with type 2 diabetes.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver (NAFLD) and steatohepatitis (NASH) are known complications associated with both being overweight and having type 2 diabetes. Both diagnoses are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases and, at worst, heart failure.
With his grant from the Novo Nordisk Foundation, Søren Nielsen will examine whether it is possible – and how this could be done – to identify signs of early changes in the cardiac metabolism which could give both patients and healthcare professionals a warning about potential heart failure. The study will be carried out by means of innovative and non-invasive tracer test analyses such as PET scans and stable isotopes.
