A fire in an ivy plant was the cause of the smoke and sirens that filled the bottom of the University Park during the afternoon of Thursday 11 June. Nobody was hurt.

Work on the felt roofing in the Department of Biomedicine's anatomy building on Wilhelm Meyers Alle caused the plant to catch fire. The fire quickly spread along the wall where the withered plant was placed and began to give off smoke. The smoke then spread into the anatomy building through a ventilation system, which sucked it into the building. This in turn set off an alarm leading to the employees evacuating the building and the fire brigade being called in. The evacuation went according to plan and no one was hurt.
The building will now be checked by the fire brigade and AU's building services staff before a date for reopening is announced.
The ivy plant quickly caught fire.
The fire brigade quickly put the fire out.
The police, paramedics and fire engines all turned up, which also led to many curious onlookers.
