Thomas Decker Christensen conducts research into cardiothoracic surgery and carries out operations on lung cancer patients and patients with other types of cancer that spread to the lungs in the form of metastases. This is a large group of patients, and he hopes that his research will be able to help mitigate the disease and reduce the mortality rate.

In his research, the newly appointed professor often combines his experience from classical thoracic surgery with his insight into thrombosis (blood clots) and haemostasis (the ability of the blood to clot). The combination of the three subject areas provides a new perspective in relation to e.g. being able to identify and improve the treatment of patients who suffer a blood clot after lung cancer surgery.

Thomas Decker Christensen is currently involved in a register-based study of patients with blood clots who have undergone surgery for lung cancer, and a nationally randomised study to improve the treatment of patients with infections in the pulmonary cavity.
